More than one crop
So, how many times can one little kit feed you? The happy answer is: more than once!
Most oyster kits give two or more harvests. You get your first flush. Then, with a rest and a soak, you get a second flush too. That is a lot of mushrooms from one box!
Can you get a third?
Sometimes, yes! After the second flush, you can try the whole trick again.
Rest the block. Soak it overnight. Then spray and watch.
Many kits will give a third flush. It is usually smaller than the ones before. But it still counts, and it is still fun.
So the pattern is simple:
Harvest the mushrooms.
Rest the block for a couple of days.
Soak it overnight.
Spray, wait, and watch for pins.
Harvest again!
Why it slows down
Each flush uses up more of the block's food. The mycelium eats a little more every time it makes mushrooms.
After two or three crops, the food runs low. The block gets tired and pale. Fewer mushrooms come, and then they stop.
That is not a mistake. It just means the block has given all it can. What a champion!
When the block is finished
One day, no more pins will come, even after a good soak. Now the block is truly done.
But it still has one last gift. With a grown-up, you can crumble the old block onto a garden bed or into a compost heap. It feeds the soil and helps plants grow. Nothing is wasted!
A last reminder for every mushroom grower: never pick or eat wild mushrooms, never eat any mushroom raw, and let a grown-up cook your kit mushrooms first. Your kit grows a safe, known kind — that is what makes it fun and safe.
You now know the whole secret of the second harvest. One kit, many mushrooms. Well done, clever grower!
