You grew a mushroom!
Look at the mushroom you grew. It is not just one blob. It has parts, and every part has a name. When you learn the names, you can point and say them like a real mushroom scientist!
Let us start at the very top. The top part is called the cap.
What is the cap?
The cap is the wide, flat part on top. On an oyster mushroom it looks like a little fan or a seashell. That is why they are called oyster mushrooms!
Caps come in many colors. Oyster caps can be white, grey, or soft brown. Some are as small as a coin. Some grow as big as your hand.
Scientists have a fancy name for the cap too. They call it the pileus. You can say cap. It means the same thing.
What does the cap do?
The cap has a big job. It is like a little umbrella.
Underneath the cap, the mushroom keeps its most special part safe and dry. The cap sits on top like a roof. It shades that part from bright light and keeps rain off.
So the cap is not just for looks. It is a shield!
Look closely
Ask a grown-up if you can look at your mushroom together. Wash your hands first.
With your eyes, find:
The wide top. That is the cap.
The smooth or bumpy skin on top.
The curved shape, like a fan.
Run a gentle finger over the top of the cap. Is it smooth? Is it a little wavy at the edge?
Now you can point to your mushroom and say the first name: cap. One part down, more to go!
