A rainbow in the woods
Walk through a forest after rain and you might spot mushrooms in every colour you can imagine: sunny yellow, deep red, snowy white, chocolate brown, even a soft blue. It is tempting to think that colour is a clue. Maybe you have heard "bright means dangerous" or "if it looks plain, it must be fine."
Both of those ideas are wrong, and it is important to understand why.
Why colours don't work as a rule
A mushroom's colour comes from tiny natural chemicals called pigments, the same kind of thing that gives a red apple its skin colour or a carrot its orange glow. Pigments help the fungus in its own way, perhaps by protecting it from sunlight or signalling to insects. They have nothing to do with whether a fungus is safe for a person to touch or eat.
Some of the most ordinary-looking mushrooms, small, brown, and easy to miss, can be some of the riskiest ones growing wild. Meanwhile, some strikingly colourful mushrooms are not risky at all. There is simply no rulebook that says "bright orange means stop" or "boring brown means go."
Even experts need more than eyes
People who study fungi for their whole lives are called mycologists. Even they do not decide if a wild mushroom is safe just by glancing at its colour. They look closely at the shape underneath the cap, the way it grows, sometimes even its smell, and often they use a microscope to check the spores, the tiny dust-like specks that fungi release to make new fungi. Identifying a wild mushroom correctly can take years of training.
If trained scientists need all of that to be sure, you can see why colour alone could never be a safe shortcut for anyone.
The real takeaway
So the next time you spot a beautiful purple mushroom or a plain grey one, enjoy it with your eyes. Notice its colour, its shape, maybe even sketch it in a nature journal. Just remember that you truly cannot tell whether a wild mushroom is safe by looking at it, no matter how bright or how dull it seems.
In the next lesson, you'll learn the one golden rule that keeps every young explorer safe around wild mushrooms, every single time.
