Turn your numbers into a picture

You have counted, measured, and weighed. Wow, that is a lot of numbers! Now let us do the best bit. Let us turn your numbers into a chart.

A chart is a picture made of numbers. It helps you see your mushroom story at a glance. You do not need to touch your kit for this lesson, just your notebook and some colours.

A bar chart of growing

One easy chart is a bar chart. It uses tall and short bars to show numbers. A tall bar means a big number. A short bar means a small number.

Let us make one for how tall your mushroom grew:

  • Day 1: 2 cm

  • Day 2: 4 cm

  • Day 3: 7 cm

Here is how to draw it:

  1. Draw a line going up the side. Write 0 at the bottom, then 1, 2, 3, and so on.

  2. Draw a line along the bottom. Write Day 1, Day 2, Day 3.

  3. For each day, colour a bar up to the right number.

Day 3 has the tallest bar. Your eyes can see the growing right away!

Reading your chart

A good chart answers questions fast. Look at your bars and ask:

  • Which day was the tallest? (The longest bar.)

  • Which day was the shortest? (The smallest bar.)

  • Did the bars go up each day?

When bars get taller and taller, that means your mushroom kept growing. Fun fact: oyster clusters can double in size every day, so your bars often jump up quickly!

Make it your own

You can chart anything you measured:

  • How many mushrooms each day.

  • How wide the caps were.

  • How heavy each harvest was.

Use a different colour for each bar. Add a happy title at the top, like "My Mushroom Growing Chart".

Now you can show your family the whole story with one picture. You are a real mushroom scientist and a maths star. Remember, only your safe kit mushrooms go in your chart, never wild ones from outside. Amazing work finishing Mushroom Maths!

Quick quiz

Answer every question, then check how you did. You can try as often as you like — your score is just for you.

1.What does a tall bar on a bar chart mean?
2.On a growing chart, how can you spot the tallest day?
3.What is a chart good for?
4.Which of these could you turn into a chart?
