Maths in the mushroom patch

Growing mushrooms is fun. But did you know it is full of maths too?

Your grow kit gives you lots to count. Every day, new mushrooms pop up. Counting them helps you see how well your kit is growing. Let us begin!

First, the golden rule. Wash your hands before you touch your kit. Then bring a grown-up to help.

What is a cluster?

Oyster mushrooms do not grow one at a time. They grow in bunches. A bunch of mushrooms joined at the bottom is called a cluster.

A cluster can look like a little bouquet of shells or fans. One kit might grow one big cluster, or a few smaller ones.

So you can count two things:

  • How many clusters you have.

  • How many mushrooms are in each cluster.

Let us count together

Go to your kit and look closely. Point your finger at each cluster. Count them out loud: one, two, three.

Now pick one cluster. Count the little caps you can see. Some might be tiny baby mushrooms called pins. Count those too!

Tip: mushrooms grow fast. A cluster can double in size in just one day. So the number you count today may be bigger tomorrow. That is why counting every day is so fun.

Adding it all up

Here is a fun bit of maths. Say you have 3 clusters. One has 5 caps, one has 4 caps, and one has 6 caps.

How many mushrooms in all? Add them up:

5 + 4 + 6 = 15 mushrooms!

You can write your number down each day in a little notebook. Draw a box for each day and pop your number inside.

Remember, your kit mushrooms are a safe, known kind. Never count or pick wild mushrooms outside. Those are only for expert grown-ups. And a grown-up always cooks kit mushrooms before anyone eats them.

Great counting, little mushroom mathematician!

Quick quiz

Answer every question, then check how you did. You can try as often as you like — your score is just for you.
