How heavy is your harvest?
Harvest day is here! Your mushrooms are big and ready. Now for some fun maths. Let us find out how heavy they are.
We measure how heavy things are with a scale. A kitchen scale is a little machine that shows a number when you put something on it. That number is the weight.
Wash your hands. Then ask a grown-up to help you harvest and weigh.
Grams and how they work
Weight is often measured in grams. We write it as g for short.
A gram is very light. One raisin weighs about one gram. A big handful of mushrooms might weigh 100 grams or more!
When the scale shows a bigger number, your harvest is heavier. Simple!
Let us weigh
Here is how to weigh your mushrooms:
A grown-up twists the cluster off the block.
Put a bowl on the scale.
Press the zero button so the bowl does not count. This is called taring.
Pop the mushrooms in the bowl.
Read the number. That is your harvest weight!
A small kit often gives about 50 to 160 grams on the first harvest. A bigger kit can give even more.
Adding up your harvests
Here is a secret. Many kits grow more than once! You might harvest two or three times.
So you can add your weights together. Say you weigh:
First harvest: 100 g
Second harvest: 60 g
Add them up:
100 + 60 = 160 grams in all!
Write each weight down. At the end you will know your grand total.
Remember the golden rules. Oyster mushrooms must always be cooked by a grown-up, never eaten raw. And never weigh or eat a wild mushroom. Your kit is a safe, known kind. That is why we can grow, weigh, and cook it. Well done, super weigher!
