Look down at the ground
On our hunt, one place beats all the others. It is right under your feet. It is the forest floor.
The forest floor is the ground in the woods. It is covered in fallen leaves, twigs, and old logs. It feels soft and springy when you walk on it.
This is where fungi throw a party!
Fungi love dead wood
Here is a fun fact. Fungi love things that are dead.
When a tree falls, it slowly rots on the ground. Most animals cannot eat that hard, dead wood. But fungi can!
Fungi have tiny threads that spread through the wood. They soak up the food inside. That is why you so often find mushrooms growing right on old logs and stumps.
Fallen leaves are a fungus feast too. A big pile of wet leaves is full of hidden fungus threads eating away.
Nature's clean-up crew
Why is this so helpful? Fungi are the forest's clean-up crew.
Imagine if dead leaves and logs never went away. The forest would pile up higher and higher with old junk!
But fungi break the dead wood and leaves down bit by bit. They turn them into rich, fresh soil.
Then new plants and trees can grow in that soil. The forest starts all over again. Neat and tidy, thanks to fungi!
The best hunting ground
So when you go hunting, remember to check:
Old logs lying on the ground
Tree stumps
Piles of damp, fallen leaves
Soft, rotting wood
These are the top spots on the forest floor.
Remember our rule: look, don't touch your mouth. We can look closely at fungi on logs, but we never pick them or eat them. Some are not safe.
The forest floor is a fungus wonderland. Keep your eyes low and hunt on!
