The most important lesson
You are almost a real mushroom hunter! But first, the most important lesson of all.
Here it is, big and clear:
Look, don't taste. Never pick or eat a wild mushroom. Never put one in your mouth.
A safe hunter uses their eyes, not their mouth. This is the golden rule. It keeps you safe on every hunt.
Why we never taste
Some wild mushrooms are safe. But some are poisonous. They can make a person very, very sick.
Here is the tricky part. A safe mushroom and a poisonous one can look almost the same! Even grown-up experts have to look very carefully.
You cannot tell if a mushroom is safe just by looking, smelling, or touching. So the only safe choice is to never taste any wild mushroom at all.
Be a look-and-photo hunter
So what does a safe hunter do instead? You look and you photograph!
This is how real scientists work. When you find a mushroom:
Look at it closely with your eyes
Take a photo or draw a picture
Notice the color, size, and shape
Leave it right where it grows
You can build a whole photo book of mushrooms without ever picking a single one. That is the best kind of hunting.
Safe hunter rules
Let's put it all together. A safe mushroom hunter always:
Goes hunting with a grown-up
Looks but never picks or eats wild mushrooms
Takes photos instead of taking the mushroom
Washes hands with soap after touching logs, soil, or leaves
Never puts hands near their mouth during the hunt
The mushrooms we grow in a kit are different. They are a known-safe kind. Even then, we grow and cook them with a grown-up, and we never eat any mushroom raw.
You did it! You are now a safe, smart mushroom hunter. Look, wonder, photograph, and stay safe out there!
