Fungi love cozy spots

Welcome, mushroom hunter! Before we go looking, we need to know where fungi like to live.

Fungi are a bit shy. They do not like hot, dry, sunny places. They like the opposite. They love spots that are damp and shady.

Think of a cool, dark corner after rain. That is a happy home for a fungus.

Why damp and shady?

Fungi need water to grow. A dry place would make them shrivel up. So they hide where the ground stays wet and soft.

They also like shade. Under trees and leaves, the sun cannot dry them out. It stays cool and moist there all day.

That is why the best time to hunt is often after it rains!

Great places to find fungi

Fungi grow in lots of places. Here are the best ones to check:

  • Forests — full of trees, shade, and damp soil

  • Gardens — in flower beds, under bushes, and in soft earth

  • Soil — the dirt is packed with tiny fungus threads

  • Old logs — dead wood is a favorite fungus food

Even your own backyard might have fungi hiding in it. A shady patch of grass or an old wooden fence can be a home.

A wet, wonderful world

So remember the fungus rule: look where it is damp and shady.

Forests, gardens, soft soil, and dead logs are all great places to search. Bring a grown-up, and get ready to explore.

Safety first: we only look at wild mushrooms. We never pick them or put them in our mouths. Some can make you very sick. In the next lessons we will learn even more about where fungi hide!

You now know the fungus's favorite spots. Let the hunt begin!
